by Joy Lasseter, Ph.D. You have worked hard to realize your dreams. You have achieved your goals. But gradually, without really noticing how or why, does success slowly slipped through your fingers? Are you tired when you wake up, tired after lunch and tired when you finally dragged yourself home, but you can't sleep? Are you experiencing mood swings? Do you become irritable and depressed? Have you lost your enthusiasm and ambition? Have you lost your energy? If you recognize yourself in some of these patterns, you are probably on the road to burnout. What is burnout? It is the feeling that you don't have enough energy to do the ordinary chores and tasks of everyday living. Chronic exhaustion is one of the most common complaints medical doctors, counselors and psychotherapists hear from their patients. But chronic exhaustion is rarely the result of illness or depression. It is seldom caused by lack of sleep alone. Chronic exhaustion is most often the result of poor body chemistry, an energy draining lifestyle and psychological stress. Not only do we have no energy to do things but physical fatigue can affect our emotions, causing us to feel depressed and negative about ourselves. When we are tired, we are unable to think straight. We have difficulty concentrating, remembering things and focusing our attention. We fall into "robot behavior," doing the same things over and over, even knowing that it doesn't work! The brain seems unable to focus on creative thinking and problem solving. Some of you may already be in the early phase of burnout often caused by prolonged stress, lifestyle imbalances and nutrient deficiencies. Stress has become a part of almost everyone's experience in today's hectic lifestyles. But what is stress? It is our physiological response to an imagined event or outcome. Our thoughts, beliefs and attitudes create our stress response. This includes physical, mental and emotional factors. Stress has profound physiological and psychological effects. Stress inhibits dexterity. Stress impairs digestion and increases illness. Stress interferes with memory and concentration. We are complex beings. We are extremely adaptable and can cope with many difficult situations for a short term. When a pattern of high stress, poor eating habits, insufficient sleep and lack of recreation becomes a way of living, it takes its toll on our health, mentally, physically and emotionally. Whatever your lifestyle, whether you are at the peak of your career or retired, your well being must take priority. Health is not something that can be put on automatic pilot or ignored. I took my health for granted and I lost it. I suffered a mid-life health burnout. Thankfully, I was able to change my priorities, learn to take care of myself, restore my well being, and regain my energy and vitality through good nutrition, exercise and nutrient supplementation.
